The concept of American public higher education was first articulated in the 1785 charter for this university, and today UGA is one of the country’s best public research universities. As an alumnus of the School of Law, I take great pride in that standing. 

UGA is an institution of some 40,000 students whose academic quality rises every year. The faculty are committed to excellent teaching, innovative research and scholarship, and service in the land-grant tradition. I am honored to serve with them.

UGA is now the largest public research university in America to provide each undergraduate student with an experiential learning opportunity. Over the past 25 years, for example, UGA has produced more Rhodes Scholars than all but two other public institutions in the nation.
